How to spot a tech support scam

Scammers pretend to be from a big tech company, your bank, or "tech support." They count on you feeling rushed and worried. The good news: they almost always follow the same script.

The golden rule

Real tech companies never call, text or pop up a warning asking you to call them. If a message tells you to phone a number about a virus or problem — it's a scam.

Warning signs

What to do

Already gave out information or money?

  • Call your bank or card company right away using the number on the back of your card.
  • If they had access to your computer, disconnect it from the internet and have it checked.
  • Change your email password from a different device.
  • Report it to the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov.
  • Don't feel embarrassed. These scams fool smart, careful people every day.

How you'll know it's really me

  • I never call you out of the blue about a problem with your computer. You call me.
  • I never ask for gift cards, wire transfers or crypto.
  • My number is (555) 555-0123. Write it down here: ______________________

Worried about a call or message you got? Call me at (555) 555-0123 and I'll tell you honestly whether it looks real.
